Watermelon Beefsteak Tomato 25 Seeds - Impressive!
Watermelon Beefsteak Tomato 25 Seeds - Impressive! - BEEFSTEAK TOMATO: The beefsteak tomato is one of the largest tomato cultivars, with some varieties weighing in at over 2 pounds per tomato. This meaty tomato is grown in a rainbow of colors, from vibrant red to pale yellow to purple-black

Rather than maintaining a perfectly spherical shape as it develops, the beefsteak tomato takes on a decided kidney-bean shape, spreading out to the sides. The beefsteak tomato is one of the slowest-maturing tomatoes, with the largest beefsteak cultivars taking up to 90 days to produce ripe fruit

Typically, the beefsteak tomato vine will continue to produce and set fruit until the first frost. Watermelon Beefsteak Tomato - HEIRLOOM. Pink tomato. 85 days. An amazingly big and meaty beefsteak

Some weigh 2 lbs. and more. The seed cavities are tiny, and the centers are solid with firm, bright red flesh. Very impressive. Pink-skinned tomatoes occur as a result of a clear skin over red flesh

(Ordinary red tomatoes have yellow skin over red flesh.) When ripe fruits retain green pigment, tomatoes take on purple and brownish hues.

Smith & Hawken: 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden

Smith & Hawken: 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden
Smith & Hawken: 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden - Preserved by families, collected by seed savers, passed around among farmers, heirloom tomatoes are now being sought out by more and more home gardeners as an alternative to the bland sameness of commercial hybrids

And happily, these growers are discovering that heirlooms are not only vastly more flavorful, but are just as hardy and easy to cultivate as the hybrids. Dr. Carolyn J. Male, who has raised more than a thousand heirloom tomatoes, here presents 100 consistently top-performing varieties for North American gardeners

There are red tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, green, orange, purple, and even black tomatoes--like Black from Tula, with green shoulders and a dusky rose-black coloring. There are cherry tomatoes, too--try Martino's Roma, a paste with spectacular yield and built-in tolerance of blossom end rot

For every gardener, no matter how experienced, here's everything you need to know to grow and harvest tomatoes with real taste.

Smith & Hawken: 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden Reviews

Thank you Dr. Male for 3 years offantastic tomatoes!, April 7, 2003 - By  A. Ryan "Merribelle" (Westminster, CA USA)
tomatoes for home gardeners.Dr. Male manages to discuss the historical and present significance of cultivating these heirlooms in a rational voice while yet relaying her passion for the flavorful heritage they represent to her.The field guide has full-page photographs of each kind with notes on their colorful origins, flavor types and everything else you could want to know about these personal treasures.Soon you will find yourself caught up in the mania to seek out the assortment of seeds that will yield tomatoes with character, lore and unbeatable taste.Although it has a truncated field guide format and flexible cover, 100 HEIRLOOM TOMATOES also serves as an excellent primer for general tomato culture. In the first 42 pates you will learn about selecting the right heirloom for your purposes, germinating and transplanting, common diseases and conditions, saving your own seeds, etc.Dr. Male looks at various standard schools of thought thoughout this section while presenting good arguments for her ownpractices. I found this book to be one of the more honest examinations of tomato varieties, from Dr. Male's frank mention of both pros and cons down to the photos, which displayed typical physiological flaws alongside more perfect examples of the fruit and foliage. After growing and sampling for myself several of the tomatoes recommended here, I can testify that the descriptions are spot-on while leaving some room for differing climatic and cultural conditions.Dr. Male's degree in microbiology and her regular gardening magazine article contributions further reinforce her as a noted authority in this field. This is a guide that the home gardener can have confidence in. Recommended for any home vegetable gardener and not a few specialty market gardeners besides.-Andrea, aka Merribelle.
Big juicy information book for tomato lovers, August 27, 2002 - By  Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA)
was excellent. I found out my tomatoes were stressed by our constant brisk winds here in Delaware, not a deficiency of calcium in the soil or water. I know now I must plant a variety that is not prone to this defect, because it is often breezy here. The front section of the book is devoted to tomato culture, and is very complete, showing staking and trellises, saving seeds, transplanting starter plants, and more.I rate this a big green THUMBS UP and will be salivating all winter as I plan my next tomato garden for 2003.

So far so good, March 28, 2011 - By  Amy Michelle (SF Bay Area, CA)
This review is from: Heirloom Tomato Summer Feast Seeds 75 SeedsI just received the Heirloom Tomatoes Summer Feast today. They shipped quickly. I would like to add that the seeds are dyed to distinguish varieties pink seed = Costoluto, green seed = Persimmon and undyed seed = Black Krim this will help greatly. After I sorted the seeds by color I realized that there were only 67 seeds in the package when it says on the package 75 seeds. The supplier also sent plant markers for free.

The Heirloom Tomato Cookbook Reviews

The Heirloom Tomato Cookbook, January 13, 2007 - By  Lana L. Stabio (La Verne, CA)   I read cookbooks like many people read magazines: cover to cover. The Heirloom Tomato Cookbook offers not only delicious, yet simple, recipes with a suggestion for a wine paring, but also a variety of other tomato topics that range from how to's of saving seeds, drying, and cultivating of favorite heirlooms.Your gardener, chef, and tomato lover will appreciate the beautiful illustrations as well.
Pretty pictures, bad-to-average recipes, October 2, 2010 - By  Eva Gerald (Los Angeles, CA United States) may be too soggy, and the soup really suffered. The same thing happened when I made the brandywine tomato sauce -- the tomatoes disintegrated into nothing, leaving me with a lot of specks of skin and a watery sauce. It would have been helpful if the recipes had suggested several varieties that would work best, something the author did only a few times. The crab cakes were okay but would have been quite bland if I hadn't added more seasonings than the prescribed salt and pepper, and it's a good thing I did because the tomato-corn relish that accompanied it was quite unremarkable and would not have made up for the lack of seasoning in the crab cakes and the citrus aioli also didn't add much to the cakes other than a citrus-y bite.Too many "recipes" merely involve cutting up tomatoes and other fruits/vegetables, seasoning them, and adding a commonplace dressing. Most people could figure that out on their own; why was recipe space wasted on it?And do you really need a cookbook to tell you how to make a BLT just because you're using heirlooms? There are, however, informative sections on common heirloom varieties and their cultivation along with lots of pretty pictures, so I gave it two stars for that.

Ferry-Morse 3760 Heirloom Seeds Tomato - Cherokee Purple Reviews

Yum!, September 16, 2011 - By  Fae (PA)
but haven't gotten too tall or out of hand in my western PA garden; they are compact for an indeterminate variety and are producing most fruit close to the main stem, which makes them easy to trellis.I'm going to try planting the same seeds from this spring next year - we'll see how well they store over the winter and how well they germinate after a year. Even if they don't, I'm going to consider them well worth the price. The number of tomatoes I've gotten off 3 healthy plants is really incredible and they're still going strong even in my poor clay soil.
Excited to try them, November 13, 2011 - By  J. guillen "risitaluv"-   I didn't order these thru amazon but from home depot. But I googled how to grow these to male sure they would be ok as to where I live. Although I live in Hawaii I'm at a 2800 ft elevation and during the winter time gets to early 50s, sometimes late forties. But online said they don't like cold weather even though my other tomato plant I have is sprouting tomatoes. It did take almost 2 1/2weeks for the seeds to finally sprout and that was outdoors in 50 and 60 deg. Weather. I am excited to see how well they grow the closer to December and colder it gets.

The Heirloom Tomato: From Garden to Table: Recipes, Portraits, and History of the World's Most Beautiful Fruit Reviews

It's A Masterpiece, August 6, 2008 - By  Rose Marie McGee "Rose Marie Nichols McGee" (Corvallis, OR USA)   Amy Goldman so captures the magic of heirloom tomatoes the reader almost inhales that distinct summer fragrance with every turn of the page. Each tomato has a carefully researched history and sometimes even a romance shared with the reader. I especially value the detailed notes on each variety for sweetness, flavor, texture and general growing information.Victor Schrager's tomato photographs are extraordinary and used lavishly throughout the book. This is a book to share and show every friend who gardens or enjoys good food. And, yes, there are some fine recipes included.
The VERY best book on Heirloom tomatoes, October 5, 2008 - By  Sharon Hazelton "Tomato Girl" (Fortuna, CA)
I bought this book for my husband Dennis for our anniversary. He planted over 50 tomato plants this year and we have been enjoying some and others we made salsa and sauce from.We have been buying Heirlooms at our local farmer's market but wanted to grow some or our own.So if you are a home gardener and into growing the very best Heirloom tomatoes on your block this is the book for you.Amy Goldman has researched everything you'd want to know about Heirloom tomatoes from which are the best, what types are available and which do well in certain areas. She's done all the work for you. There is information on taste, color and the various types of tomatoes so that you can grown tomatoes to match your tast palate. And she's included recipes as well.Another great thing about this book is the seed guide in the back which are divided by states and there are several to choose from. This is by far the quintessential book on Heirloom Tomatoes.

Black Krim Tomato 30 Seeds - Russian Heirloom
Black Krim Tomato 30 Seeds - Russian Heirloom - HEIRLOOM TOMATO: Heirloom Tomatoes are just what their name implies. They have been handed down, through generations of farmers and gardeners, from family member to family member. Many of these tomato varieties are known to have thrived since the 1800's

Unlike hybrids, they are not selectively bred for taste or appearance. They are open-pollinated, growing 'true to type' plants, like their predecessors, from seed. Heirloom Tomato Plants will add untraditional color and pleasing variety to your garden harvest

Black Krim Tomato: Plant must be staked or caged, flattened, globe shaped, 8 - 12 oz., dark red-purple fruit with delicate skin, green shoulders, green tinted flesh, full flavor with slight saltiness that enhances the taste, very juicy.

Black Krim Tomato 30 Seeds - Russian Heirloom Reviews

Proof that tomatoes are a fruit, September 13, 2009 - By  Richard A. Moore "gadget guru" (USA)   This review is from: Black Krim Tomato 30 Seeds - Russian HeirloomFirst off, nothing I have purchased from Hirst has produced anything like the pictures, I'm positive they turn up the saturation on the photos for emphasis. However, nothing I have purchased from Hirsts has disapointed me either. The seeds came with instructions good enough for a novice planter. In the Rocky Mountain region around 70% of my seeds sprouted but only a small percent of those sprouts survived due to stubborn seed hulls. The plants that survived have done well and love to climb. The tomatoes I've gotten are a slightly darker red with green stripes and splotches, about the size of a Roma. The tomatoes are unusually fleshier than most and have more of a plum sweetness to them making them great for eating by themselves.Drying them brings out a hint of apple, again making them great alone or with a salad.
Russian black, February 24, 2010 - By  Dorothy J. Blessett (USAMISSOURI)
when it was practical I put them in buckets, planters, old water bottles, and slowly but surely in the ground, an above ground planter I had made- I had never eaten realtomatoes before obviously--- it was amazing, go outside in the mornings, pick a warm ripe absolutely delicious dark tomato or 2 and make a 'mater' sandwhich for breakfast every morning.I had so many that I had to come up with a way to preserve them so here came the green bags and I had a refrigerator drawer full beforeI knew it.I was sorry to see the season end.I highly recommend these wonderful tasty tomatoes, if I can do it--- anyone can.Just takes time and determination.

Black Sea Man Tomato 10 Seeds - Heirloom Reviews

Black Sea Man Tomatoes, July 1, 2010 - By  Livnletliv-
, the plants don't have nearly as many fruits as most of my other tomatoes, and I have read that this is a determinate plant, meaning all the fruit comes in at once and then it's done. Also, when I chose these seeds, I was drawn in by the color of the fruit in the photo, and believed that these would actually be a deep purple to black when the tomatoes were ripe. After ordering them and looking further, I have found that they are most often deep red or brown in color, leading me to feel that the seller misrepresented the product and included doctored photos or images of some other type of tomatoes.Edited to add: I am changing my rating from three to four stars because when I wrote my original review, it was still a little early in the season and I hadn't gotten to taste any of the fruit yet or seen exactly how much the plants would produce. They did produce more fruit than I expected, though not nearly as much as some, and after tasting the BSM tomatoes, they became my favorites of the many types of tomatoes I grew last year and I regretted giving away so many of the seedlings. They were delicious and had a slightly salty taste. I still can't justify a five out of five stars, however, because I still felt that the photo provided was very misleading. Because they tasted so good, I really would have liked it if the plants had yielded more fruit, but that seems a rather small nit pick considering they yielded more than I expected and they were hardly the least productive tomatoes in the garden. I feel it really should get four and a half stars, but if a half star is an option, I don't see how to do it. If you like a slightly saltier tasting tomato, I would highly recommend these, but would also suggest that you make up for lower yield with more plants.
Fast germination for me., September 20, 2008 - By  Steven Robinson "S. Robinson"-    A caterpilar had eaten almost the enire plant down to a couple of mangled stalks. It grew back quickly and is starting to produce fruits again. Wasn't able to save any tomatos from the first batch.
